Sporting Life

Sport has traditionally been an important part of life at Warrane.

It fosters college spirit with rivalry between floors within the college and competition among the other university colleges on the campus.

It also provides opportunities for students to develop life-long habits of keeping physically fit, and it helps residents balance their often intense academic activities.

InterCollege Sports Shield

Warrane fields teams for all sports in the InterCollege Sport Shield competition. The competition is staged over both semesters of the academic year and includes Rugby Union, Soccer, Basketball, Hockey and Tennis. The competition also hosts a number of carnival days for sports like AFL, Rugby League, Cross Country, Water Polo, Volleyball and Cricket.

Warrane is always a contender for the Premiership of the InterCollege Sports Shield and has won the Sports Shield eight times in the past nine years (2010, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 & 2018).

IntraCollege Sport

More informally, there are many opportunities for social sports. Regular games of touch football, soccer and cricket are played on the neighbouring Village Green, as well as basketball and indoor soccer in the university’s sport and recreation centre. There are also yearly IntraCollege competitions such as the Warrane Wimbledon tennis tournament, the InterFloor touch football competition and the annual Seniors vs Juniors Soccer matches.

Willie Wong Sports Award

Each week, the “Willy Wong Sportsman of the Week” award is presented at formal dinner to the best performing sportsman of the week. Willie Wong was a Warrane resident in the early 1970’s who excelled at many college sports. Willie generously endows the pennants that are presented each week.
